“Open-source security is about connecting the international, the interagency, the private-public, and lashing it together with strategic communication, largely in social networks.” —James Stavridis (TED 2012)

I remember being in the audience the year that Admiral Stavridis gave this TED Talk. It struck me as a bit odd that the military — which is traditionally secretive — would want to think in terms of open source. Nowadays, Stavridis’ thinking makes a great deal more sense to me. I realize now that open source is primarily about community and communication — it’s not just a technology. —JM
